Start with the source image, not the effect
It's tempting to pick a flashy motion effect first and then go looking for a photo to apply it to. In practice, the reverse produces better results. Every animated-image technique — whether it's a parallax camera move, a particle overlay, or a subtle light pulse — depends on qualities that are already present in the still photo: depth separation, a clear light source, a distinguishable subject and background, or clean negative space. Before choosing a motion style, look at your image and ask what it already has to offer.
A photo with a sharply focused subject against a softly blurred background is a strong candidate for parallax or depth-based motion, because the software (or artist) has an obvious layer to separate. A photo that's uniformly sharp front to back, with no clear foreground/background split, will resist that kind of treatment and is better suited to an overlay-based effect like drifting particles, weather, or a light sweep that doesn't depend on depth at all.
Resolution and file quality matter more than people expect
Any animation technique that moves or repositions pixels — zooms, parallax shifts, warps — will eventually expose the edges of your frame or reveal areas that weren't in the original shot. Low-resolution source images have less room to be pushed before compression artifacts or upscaling blur become visible. If you're planning to animate an image, start with the highest-resolution version you have access to, ideally straight from the camera or a high-quality export, not a version that's already been compressed for web use.
Match motion intensity to context
Motion draws attention, and attention is a resource you should spend deliberately. A subtle, slow-moving effect — gentle cloud drift, a soft light sweep, a barely-there parallax — tends to suit contexts where the image needs to feel alive without competing with other content: a website hero section, a portfolio piece, an editorial photo essay. Bold, fast-moving effects — particle bursts, glitch artifacts, dramatic zooms — suit contexts where the goal is to interrupt a scroll or grab attention in a crowded feed, such as a paid social ad or a promotional graphic.
Mismatching intensity to context is one of the most common mistakes in image animation. A bold glitch effect on a quiet, contemplative landscape photo undercuts the mood the photo was trying to create. A barely-visible parallax drift on a loud, high-energy product ad won't register at all against everything else competing for attention on the page.
Think in loops, not clips
Unlike video, most animated-image use cases call for a loop: a short animation that plays continuously without an obvious restart point. Designing for a loop changes how you think about motion. Instead of a beginning, middle, and end, you're designing a cycle — the end state has to flow naturally back into the beginning state. Effects that ease in and out, or that use continuous motion (like drifting particles or looping camera pans), tend to loop more convincingly than effects with a hard directional endpoint, like a single one-way zoom that has nowhere to go once it finishes.
Consider what shouldn't move
Just as important as choosing what to animate is choosing what to leave alone. Faces, in particular, tend to look uncanny with anything beyond the most restrained motion — viewers are extremely sensitive to unnatural movement in a human face. Text and logos usually read better staying crisp and static while background elements carry the motion. A good rule of thumb: animate the environment around your subject before you animate the subject itself, and always ask whether the motion is adding to the image's story or just proving that motion is possible.
