Read the photo before you touch it
Every photo has a set of visual cues that suggest what kind of motion would feel native to it, rather than pasted on top. A photo with visible atmospheric haze, a light source, or environmental texture — smoke, dust in a sunbeam, mist over water — is already telling you what kind of motion belongs there. A clean, graphic product shot on a plain background is telling you something different: that motion should come from controlled camera movement or a subtle highlight, not atmospheric effects it has no visual basis for.
Spend a minute cataloguing what's actually present in the frame: light direction and quality, implied depth, any reflective or glossy surfaces, weather or atmosphere, and how isolated the main subject is from its background. This short inventory does most of the work of choosing an appropriate effect category before you even open a tool.
Categories of motion, and when to reach for each
Camera-motion effects (zooms, pans, parallax) work on almost any photo with reasonable depth, and are the safest default when you're not sure what else would fit — they simulate a real camera doing something a real camera could plausibly do.
Atmospheric and weather effects (drifting smoke, falling rain or snow, floating dust) require a plausible reason to exist in the frame. They tend to fail when applied to a photo that has no environmental basis for them — falling snow on an indoor product shot reads as a mistake, not a style choice.
Lighting effects (pulsing glow, light sweeps, moving reflections) require an existing light source, glow, or reflective surface to animate. Without one, there's nothing for the effect to visibly change.
Distortion and stylized effects (glitch, VHS, heat shimmer, hologram) are the most opinionated category — they impose a specific visual language onto the photo rather than extending what's already there. They work best when the subject matter already has a compatible tone (tech, retro, energetic) rather than being applied indiscriminately for novelty.
Avoid over-stacking effects
A single, well-matched effect almost always reads better than multiple effects layered on top of each other. Each additional effect adds visual noise and increases the chance that two effects fight for the same visual space — for example, a light sweep and a glitch effect both drawing the eye to unrelated things at the same time. If you find yourself wanting to add a second or third effect to "finish" a photo, it's worth asking whether the first effect actually needed reinforcing, or whether the photo simply needed a stronger single choice.
Test at the size it will actually be viewed
An effect that looks compelling at full resolution on a large monitor can disappear entirely at thumbnail size in a social feed, or look chaotic when compressed into a small ad unit. Before finalizing any animated treatment, look at it at the actual dimensions and platform it's destined for. Subtle effects in particular need to be checked at small sizes, since fine detail (like individual falling snowflakes or dust motes) is the first thing to get lost in compression and scaling.
Keep the original safe
Whatever process you use to add motion to a photo, always preserve the original still image as a separate asset. You'll want it for platforms that don't support animation, for print use, and as a fallback if the animated version doesn't perform the way you expected. Treating the still photo as the permanent source of truth, and the animated version as one presentation of it, keeps your workflow flexible as requirements change.
